State environmental authorities have fined Southern Oregon Ready Mix $9,000 over air quality problems at its asphalt plant in Central Point.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality found there was too much particulate matter coming out of the plant's smokestacks on 14 days last summer.

The Medford area is under special limits for particulate matter — the fine particles found in smoke that are blamed for a variety of respiratory problems in people.

Southern Oregon Ready Mix has appealed the fine. A call to the company for comment today was not immediately returned.
