Registration for The Salvation Army's holiday-assistance program will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Nov. 2-4, and Nov. 30-Dec. 2, at The Salvation Army Church, 304 Beatty St., Medford.

People registering need to bring identification for all family members, along with income verification and proof of residence.

Families requesting assistance will receive traditional food items for a Thanksgiving dinner and a Christmas dinner, and their children 12 years of age and younger will receive toys.

The Salvation Army provided holiday food and toys to 964 local families last year and expects that number to be significantly higher this year.

Holiday distribution is scheduled to be held Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 22-23, for Thanksgiving and Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 21-22, for Christmas. As in past years, Lithia Motors is donating use of its old Dodge building at 315 Fifth St. as the distribution site.

Blackstone Audio founder, owner and CEO Craig Black recently presented fire chiefs John Karns of Ashland Fire & Rescue and Dan Marshall of Jackson County Fire District No. 5 with a check for $18,000 that the departments will split equally.

The money came from Blackstone's $5 Audiobook Sale & Family Fair that drew more than 1,000 people on Sept. 11 as a fundraiser for the fire departments. The money will be used by each department to purchase a thermal-imaging camera that will assist their firefighters in seeing into burning structures before they have to enter them.
