HILLSBORO — Hidden Valley's attempt to win its first Class 4A boys soccer state championship in 10 years came to a disheartening end at Liberty High Saturday.

Richard Gomez converted a penalty kick in the final minute of regulation play to lift Stayton to a 1-0 victory over the Mustangs.

"We played our best game of the season," said Hidden Valley coach Tim Hannah. "We may not have won the game but we left it all on the field."

On the decisive penalty kick, Hidden Valley junior goalkeeper Chris Stucke made a difficult save and deflected the shot away from the goal. On the scramble for the rebound in the box, a foul was called.

"I didn't see exactly what happened," said Hannah. "But in that type of a situation you hope the ref lets them play on."

The two schools battled on even terms most of the game. Stayton (17-1) had five shots on goal to four for Hidden Valley, while the Mustangs took seven corner kicks to five for the Oregon West Conference champion.

"We stepped it up in the second half," said Hannah. "The guys realized they could beat this team. We really started to play our game and has several opportunities we didn't capitalize on."

Hidden Valley (17-2) had an chance to take the lead in the 53rd minute, but Stayton goalie Rolando Garcia made an impressive save on Jason Kellogg's penalty kick.

Senior forward Kevin Payne and Devin Bezoff, a senior midfielder, were active in the offensive end for the Mustangs (17-2). Hidden Valley also received strong performances from Mitch Matheny, Cody Jones, Kellogg and Stucke in net.

Hidden Valley, the Skyline Conference champion, won boys soccer state titles in 1993 and 2000. It was Stayton's first boys soccer crown.

Class 4A Girls

MAZAMA 1, SISTERS 0, SO — At Hillsboro, Tiffany Taylor converted the third successful penalty kick for Mazama to lead the Vikings to the Class 4A state championship with a 3-2 edge in penalty kicks at Liberty High.

Maria Dominguez made the first attempt by Mazama and Kylie Durant netted another PK after misses by teammates Kaitlin Crowell and Hannah Reynolds. Three saves by Vikings goalie Kaylee Grigsby kept the session tied 2-all heading into the final match-clinching effort by Taylor.
