The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is investigating a report that a man pushed his way into a South Stage Road home on Saturday afternoon and fought with a woman there who tried to block his way.

The woman reported the assault and attempted burglary at about 2:25 p.m. Saturday, a sheriff's department news release said. She told investigators that a short, heavy-set man that she didn't recognize pushed his way into her home in the 3800 block of South Stage Road.

He knocked her over and the pair tussled near the doorway. She grabbed her pepper spray and sprayed him twice, the news release said. He then yelled and ran out the door.

The sheriff's department immediately sent seven deputies to the area, and got help from Jacksonville, Phoenix, and Medford police, as well as Oregon State Police. Police dogs also were called to help search for the suspect, but he wasn't found.

The suspect was described as a short man in his 40s. He weighed about 200 pounds and had short dark hair. He wore a short sleeved shirt with blue jeans and blue rubber gloves.

Investigators ask anyone with information about this case to call the sheriff's tip line at 541-774-8330.
