RENO — Southern Oregon's Austin Vanderford led the Southern Oregon wrestling team at Sunday's Reno Tournament of Champions.

RENO — Southern Oregon's Austin Vanderford led the Southern Oregon wrestling team at Sunday's Reno Tournament of Champions.

Vanderford advanced to the quarterfinals at 174 pounds before falling. He opened the tournament with a 14-2 major decision over NCAA Division I wrestler Branden Lietz of Appalachian State and then earned a 11-3 major decision victory over NCAA Division II Mark Mabry of Adams State.

Vanderford dropped a 10-3 decision in the quarters to eventual tourney runner-up Jake Swartz of Boise State. Vanderford then fell in the consolation round.

Tommie Hooper and Kyle Wirkuty both won a match in the consolation bracket.

Southern Oregon returns to action on Dec. 28 when it hosts Simon Fraser at 1 p.m.

The Raiders went 2-1 at the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo duals on Dec. 17.

Southern Oregon upset ninth-ranked Menlo 22-16, defeated Cal Baptist 31-18 and fell to NCAA Division I Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 36-9.
