The Salvation Army is set to distribute Christmas food and toys to nearly 1,200 low-income families today and Wednesday at the old Lithia Dodge building at 314 Fifth St.

Distribution is set until 4 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Last year the organization helped 964 families with food and toys during the holidays, and this year's figure represents a 25 percent increase over 2009. At the same time the need is up, donations of canned food and turkey have been off 70 percent from what The Salvation Army needs to assist this year's families, the organization said.

To help offset the cost of purchasing the food, the organization is asking for monetary donations from the community. Contributions may be mailed to P.O. Box 757, Medford, OR 97501. For further information, call 541-773-6965.
