SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Michelle Plouffe had 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Utah women's basketball team to an easy exhibition win over Southern Oregon, 91-36, Monday at the Huntsman Center.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Michelle Plouffe had 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Utah women's basketball team to an easy exhibition win over Southern Oregon, 91-36, Monday at the Huntsman Center.

Janita Badon added 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the NCAA Division I Utes, who built a 17-point halftime lead, then outscored SOU 12-2 to start the second half.

Alexi Smith led the NAIA Division II Raiders with eight points, while Nicole Mowbray and Celonna Arrington added five points apiece.

The game included three former Ashland High stars: Southern Oregon's Jamie Roupp and Josi McDermott and Utah's Allison Gida. Roupp and McDermott scored two points apiece and Gida scored three on a 3-pointer with eight seconds to go.

The exhibition loss will not count against the Raiders (8-7), who next play Northwest Christian on Dec. 30.

Wrestling

VANDERFORD SHINES — At Reno, Nev., Southern Oregon's Austin Vanderford led the Raider wrestling team in the Reno Tournament of Champions.

Vanderford advanced to the quarterfinals at 174 pounds before falling. He opened the tournament with a 14-2 major decision over NCAA Division I Branden Lietz of Appalachian State and then won an 11-3 major decision over NCAA Division II Mark Mabry of Adams State.

Vanderford dropped a 10-3 decision in the quarters to eventual tourney runner-up Jake Swartz of Boise State.

Vanderford then fell in the consolation round.

Tommie Hooper and Kyle Wirkuty both won a match each in the consolation bracket for SOU, which is in action again Dec. 28, when it hosts Simon Fraser at 1 p.m.
