South Medford coach Dennis Murphy gave his Panthers mixed reviews in a 75-55 home victory over South Eugene in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday.

"It was a case of mountaintops and valleys," said Murphy. "At times we shared the ball well and got some easy baskets. And there were times we didn't get ourselves in good defensive position and gave up baskets. We didn't defend very well in the first half."

Senior wing Josh Havird led the Panthers (6-1) in scoring as he has most of the season. Havird scored 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field.

Tevyn Mercer, a senior post, had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Panthers. All four of Mercer's field goals came in the first half.

"(Mercer) played tougher tonight than he's played before," said Murphy. "He shot the ball well in the first half."

South Medford led 37-30 at halftime, then pulled away in the second half.

The Panthers forced 18 turnovers and each team had 25 rebounds.

"Our press caused some problems for them," said Murphy.
