LAKE OSWEGO — Suspect shooting and an inability to take care of the ball cost South Medford in a 61-55 girls basketball loss to Thurston in the high-powered Laker/Nike Interstate Shootout Tuesday.

The Panthers (4-4), had 11 first-half turnovers, a like amount in the second half and couldn't gain control against the Colts of Springfield, who improved to 5-2.

The setback came one day after a 27-point loss to the nation's No. 8-ranked team from Phoenix, Ariz.

South, ranked eighth in 6A, plays at 10 a.m. today against Jefferson, last year's Class 5A state champion. It's a rematch of last year's Interstate Shootout fifth-place game, won by the Democrats.

Against the Panthers, Thurston took an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter.

"We lost momentum in the fourth," said South coach Tom Cole, adding that 6-foot-5 post Tess Picknell fouled out then. "We just went through a spurt where we couldn't make buckets, and losing Tess defensively inside hurt us."

South tried to rally by fouling, but Thurston responded by making its free throws.

The Colts' Alyse Nelson scored 18 of her 23 points in the first half. Cole put freshman reserve Ashley Bolston on the senior, who will play next year at Utah State.

"Ashley took it as a defensive challenge," said Cole of his 5-foot-9 guard. "There was some growth from that tonight in her ability to do something defensive-minded in the second half."

Yaremi Mejia scored 23 for South. Picknell had nine points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, and Kylie Towry scored 13.
