KLAMATH FALLS — The Ashland girls played well for three quarters but a subpar third period proved costly against Mazama in nonconference basketball.

The Class 4A 10th-ranked Vikings stormed back from a slim halftime deficit against Ashland to register a 47-33 home victory Saturday.

The 5A Grizzlies (4-10) used a big second quarter to take a 22-19 halftime lead.

"We stayed aggressive on offense and defense in the first and second quarters," said Ashland coach Emily Brookins. "We were patient and weren't forcing anything."

Then Mazama (12-6) outscored Ashland by 11 points in the third quarter to take command.

"We didn't come out as strong in the third quarter as I would have liked," said Brookins. "They broke down our zone."

Junior guard Allison Shulenberger performed well for the Grizzlies with eight points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.

"Every game (Shulenberger) works 100 percent," said Brookins. "She never gets frustrated. She plays her hardest no matter what happens."

Sophomore Shelby Minor led Ashland with 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Minor scored eight points in the first half, then the Vikings clamped down on the sophomore guard.

The Grizzlies hurt their cause with 23 turnovers.

"We played three solid quarters," said Brookins. "I've seen a huge improvement from our last game. It's the little things. We're not winning but we never gave up."
