CAVE JUNCTION — Illinois Valley's boys basketball team put a special focus on Tuesday night's matchup with Cascade Christian even before the season started, and the Cougars proved to be up for the challenge in the key Southern Cascade Hybrid clash.

Roger Hults scored 21 of his 31 points in the second half to rally the seventh-ranked Cougars to a thrilling 49-42 victory over No. 9 Cascade Christian, halting the Challengers' conference winning streak at 47 games. The streak dated back to 2007.

"It's the biggest win that this school's had in probably 15 years," said Illinois Valley head coach Jeff Winters. "That was a huge game for us."

The Cougars (14-2, 4-0 SCH) trailed by five points at halftime and by as many as nine points in the third quarter, but an 8-2 run to close the period, including five straight points by Hults, helped them take a 33-32 lead into the fourth. IV closed out the matchup between league-leaders with a solid showing from the foul line to keep the Challengers at bay.

"It was a good game, they played well," Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse said of IV. "Both teams played pretty good defense and it slowed the whole tempo of the game down. We tried to get out and run and did get some fastbreak points but it wasn't enough, certainly not as much as we'd like to."

Jesse Bethke, a 6-foot-7 post, contributed 16 rebounds, nine points and three blocks for the Cougars, while Roger Hults had seven rebounds and Tyler Robbins added five assists and seven rebounds.

Robbins also had the tough task of slowing Challengers point guard Davis Siliga, who finished with six points and five assists.

"To keep up with that guy and hold him to six in four quarters without any break, that's very good," added Winters.

Mason Smith had 16 points to lead the Challengers (10-6, 3-1), while Eric Morse had 11 points and 12 rebounds against the defensive pressure of Fred Hults.

The Cougars committed only 10 turnovers, a key departure from the 19 they had been averaging entering the game.
