PHOENIX — After absorbing a 29-point loss to Skyline Conference rival Mazama the night before, Phoenix had something to prove in nonconference boys basketball Saturday against Ashland.

The Pirates, ranked fifth at the 4A level, used a balanced scoring attack and inspired defense en route to a 58-35 home victory over the 5A Grizzlies.

"We got beat up (Friday) night because the team was more physical," Phoenix coach Glenn Johannes said. "We wanted to be more physical and that's what we did."

Phoenix used a 21-9 advantage in the third quarter to take control. Alex Hobson led the way with seven of his 11 points in the period.

"We came out and played hard and shut them down on defense," said Johannes. "We moved the ball on offense and got some transition points. Ashland went to a zone and we hit some open shots."

Alex Young paced the Pirates (12-5) with 14 points and Tyler Dungannon tossed in 12. Young added eight assists, five steals, four rebounds and three blocks, while Dungannon had eight rebounds and Hobson came up with four rebounds and three steals.

Ashland (7-9) leading scorer Billy Hansen was limited to a team-best 12 points.

"Basically we had a bad taste from what happened (Friday)," said Johannes. "We put on a defensive clinic. We were playing smart and playing hard. I called them out on their character and they showed what they had."
