June LeRose Koistinen, 95, died Monday, February 14, 2011, at Ashwood Senior Home, in Ashland, Ore., where she had received personal and compassionate care. She was born to Ivy LeRose and Virgil McGuffin, on May 28, 1915, in Southern California. June celebrated 50 years of marriage to Ray V. Koistinen, before his death in 1992.

A longtime member of the Unitarian Church, both in Oakland, California, and Ashland, Oregon, June was a free thinker. She persevered through difficult times using her ingenuity, and felt compassion for humans and animals alike. Balancing her learned frugality, she fully enjoyed life's pleasures, from watching hummingbirds at the feeder, to flying in a biplane over Hawaii, and riding a camel in Morocco.

June is survived by her son, Ray H. Koistinen; daughter, Diana M. Morley; grandson Kristopher Koitstinen; granddaughter, Jennifer Morley; and her grandson by marriage, Jason Archer.

June wished not to have a funeral service. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to agencies of her choice, including Planned Parenthood, Ashland Food Bank, or a hospice organization in her honor.
