An Eagle Point teen injured in a rollover crash that killed his friend Wednesday is recovering at Rogue Valley Medical.

Nicholas Madtson, 17, is listed in fair condition this morning, hospital spokesman Grant Walker said.

Madtson and 18-year-old Andrew Roberts were ejected from the bed of the Toyota pick-up truck driven by Brandon D. Hollingsworth, 19, of Central Point, when it went off the road and rolled near the intersection of Carberry Creek and Upper Applegate roads.

Roberts died at the scene. Madtson was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center by Mercy Flights helicopter where he initially was listed in serious condition.Hollingsworth was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.

The Eagle Point High School senior killed in an Applegate rollover accident will be greatly missed by his peers and his teachers, said his Principal Allen Barber.

Barber described Roberts as "an exceptional student" and "the leader of the Thespian Club."

"This is a tragedy," Barber said. "We're just thinking about his father and his mother."

Barber said school officials will offer grief counseling and opportunities to memorialize Roberts when everyone returns from spring break.

Police the boys were camping in the Carberry Creek area in celebration of spring break. They were driving to get more firewood when the crash occurred, officials said. Jackson County Sheriff's deputies continue to investigate the accident.
