Robert William Varney, 85, of Ashland, Ore., passed away Monday, March 21, 2011, at home. He was born April 3, 1925, in Livermore, Calif., the son of Cora and Henry Varney.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force, where he attained the rank of corporal. Following his discharge, he attended mechanic school, and later moved to Ashland. On December 30, 1951, in Ashland, he married Marianne L. Clary, who survives.

Mr. Varney operated a logging truck and later worked for the Ford Garage in Ashland as a mechanic. He was a fireman with the Ashland Fire Department for 22 years. He enjoyed hiking, camping, motorcycle riding and driving. Robert was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, are two sons, David A. Varney, of Centennial, Colo., and Ronald L. Varney, of Cave Junction, Ore.; a sister, Nelda Mallory, of Danville, Ore.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Henry.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 28, 2011, at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Ore.
