When will the Central Point School Board decide whether to close Sams Valley Elementary School?

The Central Point School Board has to make its decision by June when it's legally obligated to approve a balanced budget for its district of about 4,500 pupils.

Beforehand, the district will hold a public forum on the proposal at 6 p.m. Thursday in the gymnasium at Sams Valley school, 14235 Table Rock Road, which has a Central Point address.

School supporters determined to save the rural school recently met with officials from another rural school that faced closure a few years ago to learn what they did to reduce costs. The Sams Valley supporters were scheduled to meet with Central Point schools Superintendent Randy Gravon Tuesday to discuss some options, said Jason Allen, Sams Valley parent.

District officials estimate closing Sams Valley would save hundreds of thousands of dollars in operations and maintenance, including staff salaries.
