A crash has closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Phoenix.

(Updated: 1:55 p.m.) A silver Toyota Corolla veered out of the northbound lanes and into the path of a southbound Rogue Valley Transportation District bus this afternoon. The head-on collision tore the passenger car apart and smashed the front of the small, commuter bus, witnesses said.

Four people – the driver of the Toyota, the bus driver and the only two passengers in the bus – were transported to a Medford hospital, said Oregon State Police Capt. Randie Martz.

The Oregon Department of Transportation reports that a crash happened at about 12:49 p.m. five miles south of Medford, near mile It warns that two lanes are closed and drivers should use caution. Backups have reportedly reached to Medford on the freeway.

(Updated: 1:30 p.m.) ODOT officials are setting up a detour, as a lengthy delay is expected for an investigation into the crash. Southbound traffic will exit at the south Medford interchange, exit 27, to Oregon 99, then be rerouted back onto the interstate at Phoenix, exit 24.

Witnesses report that a Rogue Valley Transportation District bus is involved. The bus reportedly is in the grassy verge between the ramp and the freeway.

(Updated: 3:35 p.m.) All lanes have reopened, ODOT reports.
