MONMOUTH — Hudson Eustace got some redemption Friday during the opening day of the Class 3A state track and field meet.

The Cascade Christian junior ran his best race of the season to win the boys 3,000-meter run at Western Oregon University.

Eustace, who came into the 2010 cross country championships with the top time but finished third, posted a victorious mark of 8 minutes, 49.94 seconds. His previous fastest time this year was a state 3A best 8:56.22.

Eustace's winning effort has the Challengers tied for third with 10 points after the first day. Nyssa leads the boys team standings with 30 points.

In girls, not only is St. Mary's going for its third straight state track and field championship, the Crusaders are hoping to break the all-time state meet scoring mark for the second consecutive year.

And the Crusaders have a chip on their shoulder for added motivation.

The Catlin Gabel girls jumped out to the first-day lead with 20 points, while the Crusaders are in third with 14 and Illinois Valley is tied for fourth (13).

Catlin Gabel doesn't appear to be a threat for the team title, but the Crusaders are looking for a little pay back since losing to the Eagles 2-0 in the Class 3A/2A/1A state soccer finals. Several members of the losing soccer squad are on the Crusaders' track team.

"After getting beat by Catlin Gabel in soccer in the fall, we have them in our sights," said Volk. "Our girls really want to beat Catlin Gabel. We have a team that is so talented, it's good to have that extra spark to go that much further."

Catlin Gabel holds the 3A state meet scoring record with 105 points set in 2008.

Mackenzie Krieser and Alexi Provost-Shean had the top performances for the Crusader girls Friday. Krieser finished second in the long jump (17-1 3/4) and Provost-Shean placed third in the high jump (5-5).

St. Mary's is well positioned for another championship run with all the girls who competed in the preliminaries Friday advancing into today's finals. Additionally, St. Mary's had the fastest preliminary times in both relays. It's 4x400 relay set a state meet record with a mark of 4:02.59. The Crusaders broke Catlin Gabel's record of 4:02.90.

Illinois Valley senior Kayla Johnson had a good day with a second in the discus (127-0) and fourth in the javelin (118-11).

Cascade Christian received a third-place performance from freshman Stephanie Croy in the 3,000 (11:36.3).
