Grants Pass firefighters union, International Association of Fire Fighters Local 3564, has secured a piece of steel from the World Trade Center and intend to make it the centerpiece of a 9/11 memorial to be displayed in front of the Parkway Fire Station.

Three firefighters plan to fly to New York to pick up the 1,048-pound, 10-foot piece of steel later this summer, then drive it back to Grants Pass.

The memorial has an estimated completion date of 2012.
