Steinman Bridge, a historic bridge at milepost 3.7 on Old Siskiyou Highway near Emigrant Lake in Ashland, will close Wednesday for bridge rehabilitation.

The bridge, which is the only state bridge to loop back on itself, will remain closed until the end of June while new bridge rails and a new road surface are installed, cracked girders and walls are repaired, and a historic rock wall is rehabilitated.

No through traffic will be allowed across the bridge, including bicyclists and pedestrians. Local traffic will need to use detours, Oregon Department of Transportation project information specialist Gary Leaming said

The bridge work is being done by West Coast Construction of Coos Bay, which has a $996,886 contract to rehabilitate two 97-year old bridges on Old Siskiyou Highway — Dollarhide and Steinman. All the work on both bridges should be done by August 31.
