Alexander Barnes of Ashland High School and Cate Adams of Cascade Christian High School participated in the Poetry Out Loud state competition on Saturday, March 12, at the Kroc Center in Salem.

Poetry Out Loud involves the memorization and recitation of classic poetry. Contestants ranged in age from 14 to 18. Each contestant prepared three poems. The presentations and recitations were judged by physical presence, voice and articulation, appropriateness of dramatization, accuracy, evidence of understanding, level of difficulty and overall performance.

Alexander Barnes also competed at the state contest last year and was 2010 Oregon State Poetry Out Loud runner-up.

The Oregon champion wins an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., a $200 scholarship and $500 for the school library to purchase poetry books.
