GRANTS PASS — Twenty-one quarter horses dashed for fame Sunday in three trials at Grants Pass Downs, and eight of them earned spots in the $30,000-plus Firecracker Futurity.

The fastest qualifier was Warnock, a sorrel colt that went 350 yards in 17.63 seconds. He was ridden by Luis Torres and trained by Hector Magallanes.

Magallanes expects to have Torres aboard Warnock on the July 4 showdown of the Northwest's best 2-year-olds.

"He's my cousin," Magallanes said. "I don't tell him anything. He's just a talented guy. He studies the track every morning."

Jockey Ruben Camacho won the other two trials, first with Deniro at 17.93 seconds and then Bedas Jumpin Okie at 18.15 seconds. When asked which horse he'll ride in the Futurity, he made a whooshing sound like a jet passing and shouted, "Deniro," choosing the gray gelding.

Bradens Bustlinbooty placed behind Warnock at 18 seconds flat. The gray filly and Bedas Jumpin Okie, a brown gelding, are both owned by longtime local horseman Carl Alleman.

These top four candidates will give bettors a good choice of sexes and colors.

The second day of racing at Grants Pass Downs saw Torres add three wins to the four he posted on Saturday. Camacho also had three wins. Challenging them were Shyann Garcia and Jose Guerrero with two each.

Garcia changed the record books in the eighth race when she went 5 furlongs in 57.2 seconds on Make It a Cougar, a 5-year-old gelding that had been running at Golden Gate. The previous record was 58.2 seconds.

Shyann's father, popular ex-jockey Ralph Garcia, told her before the race that if she didn't get two wins Sunday, he'd go back to racing.

"I guess I'm staying on the ground," he said after Shyann gave him his Happy Father's Day present.

The first weekend at Grants Pass Downs concluded with no injuries to horses or jockeys. The weather brought out loads of people, and they were greeted by seafood, taco and burger concessions. Along with the new aromas, music filled the air.

Some would say you can't get enough of Johnny Cash, though a few might disagree.

A racegoer captured the mood at the Downs in one word. "This place has become festive," she said.
