Southern Oregon University Pre-College Youth Programs coordinates a Regional Spelling Contest each year, which is level two of the State Spelling Contest sponsored by the Oregon Department of Education. Three counties are represented (Jackson, Josephine and Klamath) and all schools have the opportunity to participate.

Three counties are represented (Jackson, Josephine and Klamath) and all schools have the opportunity to participate.

The 35th year competition took place on Saturday, April 30, in the Rogue River Room on Southern Oregon University's campus.

Following are the names of the winners for the Southern Region. Only the first place winners will participate in the State Spelling Contest on Sept. 3 at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem.

Division 1 - Grades 1-5

First place: Olivia Munyon, grade 5, Parkside Elementary School,Grants Pass.

Second place: Nadha Rau, grade 4, Fort Vannoy Elementary School, Grants Pass.

Third place: Bradley Tidball, grade 5, Hoover Elementary School, Medford.

Division 2 - Grades 6-8

First place: Liam Dwyer, grade 8, Lorna Byrne Middle School, Cave Junction.

Second place: Justice Armstrong, grade 7, Logos Public Charter School, Jacksonville.

Third place: Emily Madden, grade 8, North Middle School, Grants Pass.

Division 3 - Grades 9-12

First place: Will Iverson, grade 11, Hidden Valley High School, Grants Pass.

Second place: Austen Kleinberg, grade 10, North Medford High School, Medford.

Third place: Evan Carlson, grade 12, North Medford High School, Medford.
