The bands are made up of middle school, high school and college band directors from around the country who are candidates for master's degrees from Sam Houston State University's American Band College program. A summer program for band directors was established in 1989 by Professor Emeritus Max McKee at Southern Oregon University. The concert is the culmination of a week of study and rehearsal at Ashland High School.
