GRANTS PASS — Hugo Herrera picked up right where he left off at Grants Pass Downs on Saturday.

The jockey, who was the second leading rider last year, rode five winners in his 2011 debut at the track.

Herrera took home victories in the first, fifth, sixth and seventh races. Before returning to GPD, he was riding in California.

Jockey Ruben Camacho captured wins in the third and ninth races, and Jake Samuels earned first-place finishes in the fourth and 10th contests.

Justin Sherman, a 19-year-old jockey from Kennewick, Wash., secured his first career victory in the second race. His horse, Search Arnold, paid $48.20 to win.

Bob Beckner, the leading trainer at GPD the last three seasons, recorded two wins, while trainer Judi Yearout teamed up with Samuels for two victories.

Miss Slewledo, guided by lead rider Luis Torres, won the featured race, the $3,000-purse Southern Belle Stakes.

The No. 1 horse Get to It Joe sustained a back leg injury during the third race and was euthanized, marking the first euthanization at GPD this year. Last season, three horses were euthanized.

The attendance of 1,635 was down from last year's total of 1,940, but the handle was up from $34,948 in 2010 to $35,191 on Saturday.
