Sam Taylor picked up his first win on the mound and delivered at the plate as well in the second game to help Ashland sweep the Grants Pass Diggers North and snap a six-game losing streak Monday in a nonleague twin bill at the Grants Pass Sports Park.

Taylor threw a complete game in Ashland's 8-5 Game 1 victory and belted three hits, including what proved to be the game-winner, in his team's 4-3 Game 2 victory, helping the Pilots improve to 7-9.

After a string of mistake-filled games the Pilots played error free in Game 1.

"I think it was big for the morale of the team to prove that they can actually win games and play defense," Ashland coach Jeff Turner said.

Taylor allowed five earned runs on 11 hits in the first game, striking out three while improving to 1-1. Taylor Humphrey and A.J. Adams did big-time damage at the plate, coming through with three hits apiece. Both also stole a base and scored a run.

In the second game, Ashland used some clutch hitting from Taylor to dig itself out of an early 3-0 hole. He smacked an RBI triple to bring Ashland within one run in the fourth, scored the tying run on a wild pitch moments later, then delivered an RBI single in the fifth to give the Pilots the lead for good.

On the mound, Ryan Bottimore pitched the first two innings, Eric Carlson pitched three and Carter Glick pitched the last two, escaping a two-on, one-out jam in the seventh. Carlson struck out one and walked one in three scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season.

Ashland travels to face Area 4-leading North Medford today. Game 1 of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
