GRANTS PASS — The Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team showed off a compelling mix of volume hitting and fine pitching in their Area 4 sweep of the Grants Pass Nuggets at All Sports Park on Wednesday.

GRANTS PASS — The Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team showed off a compelling mix of volume hitting and fine pitching in their Area 4 sweep of the Grants Pass Nuggets at All Sports Park on Wednesday.

The Mustangs — who finished with 30 hits, including 12 doubles — won the wild opener 20-9 and cruised to a 12-2 victory in the nightcap.

Grants Pass rattled off 18 hits in Game 1, but was kept quiet for most of Game 2 by pitcher Brady Thomas. The right-hander owned a no-hit shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning before Mike Macuk singled with two outs. Andrew Tracy followed with his second two-run home run of the night and then Corey Wynant recorded a base hit before the Nuggets grounded out to end things.

Colin Sowers was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, Seth Brown 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run and Jessie Hornbrook 2-for-3 in the second game for Medford (17-6, 6-2 Area 4).

The Mustangs racked up 19 hits in the first game.

Billy Hansen went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, Brown 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs, Ethan Schlecht 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs and Lucas Stone 3-for-6 with an RBI in Game 1.

Hornbrook, who owns a 16-game hitting streak, finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Brent Hegdahl was 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.

Tracy went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and Nathan Etheridge finished 3-for-5 for the Nuggets in Game 1.

ASHLAND 2-5, NORTH MEDFORD 1-15 — Ashland's AJ Adams scored the go-ahead run on a walk in the top of the sixth inning in Game 1 and North Medford cranked out 11 hits in the nightcap in the Area 4 split at North Medford High.

Christian Gillis went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Charlie Walker pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and five walks in the first game. In the sixth, Adams was walked with the bases loaded to give Ashland its 2-1 lead.

Taylor Raff's RBI single, which drove in Isiah Luzny, tied the first game at 1 in the bottom of the fifth inning for North (19-6, 10-4 Area 4).

The Pilots used five different pitchers who combined to allow 12 walks in Game 2.

Bryan Carbonell was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, Micah Brown 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, Austin Zavala 2-for-4 with an RBI and run and Gillis 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a run for the Mavericks in the nightcap. Hayden Evans offered up a two-out, two-run RBI single in the victory.

Ashland's Evan Westhelle went 2-for-2 with a run.

Steven Sparacino, Sebastian Reynolds, Anthony Martin, Chris Painter, Evan Erskine and Tyler Aplin each recorded two hits in Game 1 for the Comets (13-7, 10-4 Area 4). Aplin also scored three runs.

Ben Zomerdyk was 2-for-3 in the first game for the Wolfpack.

In the second game, Ty Fox finished 3-for-3 with three runs and Reynolds was 2-for-5 for Central Point.

Jake Miller had two hits, including a leadoff home run in the fifth inning, and Jake Isola and Dillon Huntley both registered two hits for the Wolfpack.
