Henry Hank Martinius Malden
Henry Martinius Malden passed away on July 11, 2011. He was born on November 29, 1919, in Poulsbo, Wash. He was the youngest of seven children born to Norwegian immigrants, Lars and Augusta Malde.
Hank grew up in Seattle, Wash., and played on the winning 1937 Ballard High School city championship basketball team. He was part of the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 and 1939, as a cat operator and doing road construction. In 1939, he joined his brother, Albert, at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. During World War II, Hank served in the Army Counter Intelligence Corps in the South Pacific. After the war he returned to Alaska to work with his brother, Anton, trapping and gold mining, and became gold dredge master in Livengood, Alaska. In 1950, he married Ruth Loraine Lambert. They had many wonderful years together, until she passed away in 2003. In 1955, he joined the Merchant Marines, sailing the South Pacific for three years. Hank was a lifetime member of the Northwest Laborers Union #242. Until his retirement in 1968, he was a hod carrier and worked in construction in Seattle.
Hank loved to fish, spending lots of good times in Puget Sound with his buddies. He also loved to garden and do brick work around his home. He constructed a beautiful water fountain which was surrounded by his colorful Azaleas and Rhododendrons, for all of which he was very proud. In 2007, he moved to Ashland, Ore., to be near his nephew and niece, Marshall and Suzan Malden. He spent these last years living at Mountain View Retirement Home, where he enjoyed many friends, helping them out whenever he could.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; four brothers; and one sister. He is survived by his brother, Mel, who will be 100 years old on July 31, 2011; many nephews; nieces; and great-nephews; and great-nieces.
A celebration of Hank's life will be held Sunday, July 24, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., at Mountain View Retirement Home on the first floor.
