Edward D. Walls passed away July 17, 2011, at the age of 90, from natural causes. Born in Placentia, Calif., July 22, 1920, he was known by the name of Ed to his friends and Dale by his family. He married Ruth Lucille Merritt in 1938. They were married for 71 years, when she preceded him in death on January 27, 2010.
Dale moved to Oregon in 1933, where he made his home in Ashland. He moved from Ashland to Talent, Ore., in 1947, living there until August of 2009. He and his wife then moved to Skylark Assisted Living in Ashland.
Dale was proud of his Cherokee and Choctaw heritage, taking the name of Eagle Rock and joining the Northwest Cherokee Confederacy. An avid rock hound, his other hobbies included fishing, gardening, faceting, and beading, plus numerous other Indian crafts.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in 1944. Returning to Ashland after the war, he worked for Southern Pacific Railroad until the steam locomotives were shut down. He then went to work at Timber Products as a boiler fireman until the plywood plant closed. After that, Ed worked at Medford Senior High School as head custodian, retiring in 1983.
Survivors include his daughter, Peggy Martin and husband, George, of Beaverton, Ore.; son, Kip Walls, and wife, Andrea, of Aptos, Calif. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren, Karen Hazelton, of Poulsbo, Wash.; Lee Hazelton, of Vancouver, Wash.; Alan Hazelton, of Molalla, Ore.; Steven Hazelton, of Oregon City, Ore.; Patrick Hazelton, of Estacada, Ore.; Shaun Walls, of Aptos, Calif.; and Renee Turiello, of Aromas, Calif.; plus twelve great-grandchildren.
Also surviving is his brother, Billy Lee Walls, who resides in North Carolina.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Clarence Walls and Maybelle (Chancellor) Walls; and sisters, Wanda Hass, Barbara Clark, and Christian Walls.
Per his request, there will be no formal service. Later, a gathering will be announced to family and friends. At that time, his cremated remains, along with his wife's, will be interred at Eagle Point National Cemetery.
