John Spencer Beattie, 75, passed away July 14, 2011, in Medford, Ore., following a brief illness. John was born December 30, 1935, in Sumner, Wash. He was the seventh of 11 children born to David and Hilda Purvis Beattie.
Following graduation from Sumner High School, John attended the University of Washington and the University of Pittsburgh, where he studied electrical engineering. He was employed 19 years with Jackson County, Ore., as a system analyst and retired in 2006.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Jacksonville, Ore., since 1981, where he served in various capacities, including president and lieutenant governor, and was currently serving on the board of directors. In addition to being an accomplished public speaker, he loved to travel and play his guitar; he also enjoyed photography, reading and computers.
John will be missed by his loving wife of 48 years, Mary Gordon Beattie; daughter, Marilyn (Dale) Beattie Self, of Denver, Colo.; six surviving siblings; family; and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, September 24, 2011, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 745 N. 10th, Central Point, Ore. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Pantry. Call for information 541-776-9085.
