STANFORD, Calif. — Sophomore Ray Schireman led the North Medford boys cross country team to third place in the Stanford Invitational — their best showing in the meet.

STANFORD, Calif. — Sophomore Ray Schireman led the North Medford boys cross country team to third place in the Stanford Invitational — their best showing in the meet.

Schireman placed ninth in a division for larger schools, which had 32 teams. The meet had five divisions, each with 32 to 36 teams.

Schireman's time for 5,000 meters was 15 minutes, 58 seconds. His time ranks seventh in Oregon among Class 6A runners. Teammate Devyn Baldovino was 26th in 16:51.

The North girls placed 14th, led by Brenna Phelps, who was 25th in 19:36.

St. Mary's girls, competing in the small-school division, got a 10th-place finish from Sarah Bennion in 19:50. Her time is tops in Oregon for Class 3A/2A/1A runners by 48 seconds. The Crusader were led by Tate Jacobson's 14th-place finish in 17:09, his season's best.

ASHLAND GIRLS WIN — At Eugene, Ashland's girls, paced by Dana Greenblatt, won the Northwest Classic at Lane Community College.

Greenblatt placed third among team runners and fourth overall in the 5,000-meter race, clocking 20:16. Andrea Scherrer was eighth in 20:51 as the Grizzlies' top five runners were in the top 17 in team competition.

Ashland's 54 points were 10 better than runner-up South Salem's.

South Medford was 10th, paced by Tristan Husted, fifth in 20:39.

In the boys race, North Valley placed third behind Siuslaw and Yreka, Calif. The Knights' Jonathan and David Cornish, both juniors, were in the top 10. Jonathan was third in 16:12 and David ninth in 16:45.

Ashland was seventh, with Sam Jackson clocking 17:20 for 17th place.

Hudson Eustace of Cascade Christian ran a strong race, placing sixth in 16:22.

ST. MARY'S 51, CHILOQUIN 7 — St. Mary's junior Calvin Roberts rushed seven times for 129 yards and three touchdowns and junior Glenn Alvarez also scored three times to lead the Crusaders to their first win in nonconference play at Spiegelberg Stadium.

Alvarez opened the scoring with a 75-yard run, then St. Mary's successfully recovered an onside kick and Roberts capped that drive with a 16-yard run for a quick 14-0 lead. Alvarez added a 1-yard TD run and 37-yard punt return for a score, while Roberts tacked on TD runs of 5 and 70 yards.

Connor Engle led the Crusaders (1-3) with 71/2 tackles against Chiloquin (0-3), which got a 33-yard TD pass from Matt Hillaire to Micah Rubidoux in the fourth to avoid a shutout.

Junior Caleb Melson led Camas Valley (4-0, 1-0 Dist. 2) with 111 rushing yards and a touchdown on six carries. Three other Hornets also scored on the ground: Brad Dancer (six carries, 68 yards), Josh Garcia (two carries, 35 yards) and Josh Maddox (two carries, 45 yards).
