ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University athletic department is starting a fundraising effort to name the Raider Stadium track the Dan Bulkley Track after the longtime coach and SOU Sports Hall of Fame member.

The project has a goal of $100,000, with all money going toward improvements of the track and field facility. The expected dedication is fall of 2012.

Bulkley served as a coach and professor at SOU from 1950-77. He started the tennis program in 1950, the track and field program in 1952, the cross country program in 1955 and the ski program in 1965.

At age 93, Bulkley continues to compete in national and international competitions in a variety of sports and holds numerous age-group world records.

SOU RANKED SECOND — At Kansas City, Mo., Southern Oregon University had a trio of grapplers earn a No. 1 ranking and had six other wrestlers receive recognition to total 85 points and a No. 2 ranking in the NAIA Wrestling Coaches' Preseason Top 20 poll.

Top-ranked Raiders include former Roseburg High standout Mitchell Lofstedt at 125 pounds, Tommie Hooper at 157 and Derek Rottenberg at 184. Southern Oregon picked up 154.5 points to rank first in the regional rankings released Tuesday.

Campbellsville (Ky.) topped the poll despite not having a top-ranked individual.
