Bill Sweat passed away Thursday morning, October 6, 2011, with his wife of 46 years at his side. Bill was born to Laura Mae and Jasper Newton Sweat, on January 9, 1930, in Hartshorne, Okla. Bill moved with his family to Shafter, Calif., in 1939. After three years, the family moved to Lone Pine, Calif. At an early age Bill started repairing cars.
In 1949, Bill married Caroline Hancock. They had three children, Susan, Bill and Shari. That marriage ended in divorce. In 1965, Bill married Margo E. Slenk, of Holland, Mich. They adopted two infant girls, Jaime Rae and Jana Lynn.
Bill worked in the auto repair business for 47 years. He was very well known as an expert body and fender repair man, specializing in auto painting. He owned a body shop, garage, and service station in Lone Pine, Calif., until he sold the business in 1989. Bill and Margo moved to Southern Oregon in 1991.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper and Laura Sweat; a sister, Mary Ann; and two brothers, Clayton and Donald Sweat. Bill is survived by his wife, Margo Sweat, of Medford, Ore.; daughters, Susan Joseph and Shari Valdon, both of Lone Pine, Calif., Jamie Sweat, of Medford, Ore., and Jana Wagner, of Wimer, Ore.; son, Bill Sweat, of Vacaville, Calif.; three brothers; four sisters; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Bill Sweat will be held November 4, 2011, 1:00 p.m., at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Bill to the American Red Cross or a charity of choice.
