George Eric Massey, 92, of Ashland, Ore., died at home on November 15, 2011. He was educated at Columbia, Harvard, and University of Chicago and then taught Philosophy at California State, Long Beach for 28 years. He contributed significantly to the development of the young university as department chair, and founder of the school's Phi Beta Kappa chapter, Honors Program and Student Advisory Program. He retired as a full professor and in 1999 and moved with his wife Barbara to Ashland, where he volunteered for Smart, and was the coordinator for Meals on Wheels. He and Barbara found Ashland such a rewarding place to live, they wished they had done so years earlier.
His greatest satisfaction, which he would declare to anyone who wanted to listen, was his family. All 3 daughters have made fine lives for themselves; two are professors in the University of California system, and the third is a gifted violinist/violist and painter who has played viola in the Britt Classical Festival for a decade, making each August a very special month in his life.
He is survived by his wife; daughters; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Anyone wishing to honor his memory can donate to Smart, 101 Market Street, Portland, OR 97201 or the Britt Classical Festival, 216 West Main Street, Medford 97501.
