LAKERIDGE — North Medford clawed back in the fourth quarter but couldn't complete the mission and lost 59-52 to West Linn in the Lakeside Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament Monday.

The loss was the first of the season for the Black Tornado in five games. It plays Glencoe at 1 p.m. today in the three-day tournament.

West Linn's defense and freshman Anthony Mathis stifled North after it took its first lead of the second half, 48-46.

Mathis then buried a corner 3-pointer and, as it had since the opening quarter, the Lions' zone defense kept the Tornado out of rhythm and secured the victory.

North's Derek Mautz poured in 22 points, going 6-for-11 from 3-point range, but the rest of the team shot just 2 of 14 from long range.

"We were getting some good looks but we weren't finding anyone else except for Derek against their zone," said North Medford coach Scott Plankenhorn. "You take away Derek today and that's not very good shooting outside the line, and we weren't very effective inside, either. Hopefully we can clean some stuff up tomorrow and get going in the right direction."

Mautz also had six steals and three assists. Chris Faust added eight points, eight rebounds and three assists for North, while Oshea Bailey dished out eight assists.

North Medford was just 19-for-51 from the field.

West Linn's Mathis had 26 points, making four 3-pointers in the process.
