Vehicle access into the Sprague River Day Use Area in the Fremont-Winema National Forest has been closed for the winter, U.S. Forest Service officials said.

The access road is very steep with tight, shaded switchbacks making the road slippery and dangerous during the winter, a news release said. The day use area is 3.5 miles east of Bly.

"We closed the access gate because public safety is the forest's primary concern," said Rachelle Huddleston-Lorton, natural resources official for Lakeview and Bly ranger districts.

People can still access the area on foot if they wish.
