LAKE OSWEGO — North Medford got off to a strong start and Tualatin wasn't able to recover in the consolation championship game of the Lakeside Holiday Classic in boys basketball Wednesday.

The Black Tornado improved to 6-1 with a 61-54 triumph that was made closer by two late 3-pointers by the Timberwolves (4-4).

Derek Mautz had his third stellar offensive game in a row to spark North over Tualatin. He scored 20 points, making 7 of 14 from the field, and totaled 61 in the tournament.

"He played really good and shot it really well," said Tornado coach Scott Plankenhorn. "He's really confident right now."

The Tornado led 21-12 after one quarter and 38-26 at halftime, playing well for periods but not long enough to run away from the T'wolves. Even after the advantage grew to 45-28 early in the third, Tualatin crawled back.

"I really liked some of the three- or four-minute segments we played," said Plankenhorn. "I liked what we did, but then there were others that were not so good. It's early. You want to extend your great minutes and shorten the bad ones."

North was up 13 with about a minute to go when Tualatin made a 3, rebounded a missed layup by North and made another trey to close the scoring.

Jordan Browne-Moore had 12 points and eight rebounds, and 10 Tornado players hit the scoring column.

North won the rebound battle, 34-27.

"Those are the numbers we ask of him," Plankenhorn said of Browne-Moore. "Then the rest of the guys chipped in. Everyone did their part to score and do our thing."

North is idle until the Abby's Holiday Classic Dec. 28-30 at North and South Medford high schools. The Tornado opens against Glencoe, a team it defeated Tuesday, 70-56.
