Medford police shot and killed an 18-year-old man at his mother's home on Pennsylvania Avenue this afternoon after he brandished a knife and failed to go down after being shot with a stun gun.

Police Chief Tim George said three to four officers responded to a home at 812 Pennsylvania Ave. at about 2:30 p.m. after receiving 9-1-1 calls of a domestic dispute between a mother and her son. The son, Elias Ruiz, came out on the front porch with a knife in his hand. Police shot him with a stun gun, then opened fire on him when he failed to drop to the ground. Emergency crews tried to revive Ruiz but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors reported they heard multiple shots, but George wouldn't confirm how many shots were fired or how many officers fired their weapons. All weapons and other evidence were being collected at the scene, George said. Oregon State Police is in charge of the investigation.
