William "Bill" Ranstead of White City, Ore., passed away
Sunday, January 22, 2012, from prostate cancer. He was 56.
Bill was born in Portland, Ore., to Robert and Lois V.
Ranstead. The family moved to Gresham, Ore., in 1966, where he graduated from Gresham High School in 1973. He enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1973, and was
honorably discharged in 1979. He attained the rank of
sergeant E-5 during his service.
Bill worked at several jobs. He was the gun manager for a Gresham area sporting goods store before starting a 19 year career as a security guard for an armored car company.
He married Lois, his high school sweetheart, in 2002, in
Corbett, Ore. They later moved to the Medford, Ore., area when he was transferred from Portland.
Bill was a volunteer firefighter and paramedic in Portland. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. He was also an avid gun collector. His love of shooting earned him the nickname "Rambill."
He and his wife also raised and rescued many exotic birds and llamas that needed a good home.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; his son, Bradley Ranstead, of Portland, Ore.; his stepsons, Justin Goodrich, of Newberg, Ore., and Aaron Goodrich, of Sherwood, Ore.; and two grandchildren, Austin and Cheyenne. He is also survived by his mother, Lois V. Ranstead, of Gresham, Ore.; his brothers, Larry Ranstead, of Gresham, Ore., Steve Ranstead, of
Troutdale, Ore., Alan Ranstead, of Boring, Ore., and his two
sisters, Karen Aiken, of Plano, Texas, and Kathleen Payne, of Corbett, Ore.
A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of the River Catholic Church, Rogue River, Ore., Saturday, January 28, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. A gathering for his friends and family will be held at his home after the service. All are welcome.
A memorial fund has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank in Bill's name. Contributions will go to the fight against cancer.
