Joyce A. Wassum, 91, of Medford, Ore., passed away Saturday, January 21, 2012, at Rogue Valley Medical Center. She was born January 8, 1921, in Chico, Calif., to C.B. and Gertrude Whitmoyer. She was a graduate of Chico State University and taught in Willows, Calif., until her marriage.

Joyce married Walter "Willie" Wassum on February 24, 1943, and relocated to Vallejo, Calif., following the completion of his Navel service over seas. A job relocation brought them to the Rogue Valley in 1963.

Community service was an essential part of her life and she was an active volunteer while raising her family. A lifetime member of the United Methodist Church and an active member of Medford Crater Lions were among many ways she served her community.

She is survived by her daughters, Sylvia Annigoni, of Pennsylvania, Wilma Fixsen, of Sacramento, Calif., and Melissa (Jim) Kusnerik, of Medford, Ore.; five granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Willie, in 2005.

A private service will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012, at Eagle Point National Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, remembrance donations can be made to the Southern Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Center, in Medford or the American Cancer Society.
