Fire crews from across the Rogue Valley are headed to a fully involved house fire in the 2000 block of Knowles Road.

Jacksonville fire crews were first on scene, followed by Medford Fire-Rescue and Jackson County Fire District No. 5.

A thick column of smoke was visible from downtown Medford.

Updated 7:20 p.m.: The flames spread into the crowns of trees, leaping some 60 feet in the air, witnesses said. A constant crackling, like splitting trees can be heard.

Updated 7:40 p.m.: Firefighters are pumping water from a portable pool up a narrow gravel driveway to a home and large shop that are burning. Neighbors report that the residents have a custom woodworking business there.

Updated 9:15 p.m.: The fire destroyed two conjoined mobile homes, Medford Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Justin Bates said. One of the owners, who was home at the time, tried to put it out himself at first and suffered slight burns to his arms, Bates said. The homeowner declined to comment to a reporter about the fire.

Property records list the owner as John O'Brien.

A cause had not yet been determined.
