Medford properties with uncontrolled grass, weeds and brush over 10 inches tall must be mowed by June 1, Medford Fire-Rescue officials said.

The ordinance is to prevent wildland-urban interface fires from spreading during the dry summer months and reduce their likelihood.

Weeds and grass on properties of less than one acre must be cut or removed completely. Properties bigger than one acre must have a minimum 30-foot wide defensible space around the property's perimeter, meaning brush, grass and weeds need to be cleared back that far. Properties must be divided in to parcels of no more than 2.5 acres apiece with 30-foot breaks between them.

Structures on hillside areas must have at least 100 feet of defensible space around their perimeter.
