Amber Black missed her soccer team's first two Rogue Valley Cup matches because she was competing at the state track meet in Eugene on Saturday.

On Sunday, the North Medford senior more than made up for her absence.

Black scored both goals in the undefeated U19 Rogue Valley Soccer Club Rogue Wave's 2-0 victory over Grants Pass Youth Soccer Club United at North Medford High.

Later in the afternoon, the Rogue Wave edged GPYSC Chaos 1-0 with a goal by Charis Darnall to improve to 4-0 at the three-day tournament.

The RVSC squad, which has shut out every opponent it has faced so far, will take on the unbeaten Southern Oregon Scrubs (4-0) in the U19 title match at 10 a.m. this morning at Hoffbuhr Field.

The Rogue Wave was good without Black and even better with her on the pitch.

After returning from the University of Oregon's Hayward Field on Saturday night, the 100-meter hurdler said she had a foretelling dream about her Cup debut.

Sure enough, it came true.

"I dreamed that (my soccer coach) said I would be playing center mid, and then he comes up to me today and says, 'You're playing center mid,'" Black said. "I have weird dreams."

Head coach Ted Darnall's managerial decision worked out masterfully. Black, who also plays forward, offered up an offensive effort that complemented the Rogue Wave's determined defense and helped manufacture marvelous midfield play.

In the 11th minute, Black collected a pass from Blair Shanklin-Rice and whipped in a shot from about 20 yards out.

About midway through the second half, Black launched a towering missile from nearly 45 yards away that had United suspended in animation. The ball sailed through the air for several long seconds before finding a home under the upper lip of the goal post.

"That was pretty phenomenal," said teammate Makayla Hickman, who played at Crater during her high school career. "Those two goals were beautiful. I don't think anyone could ever execute those besides Amber."

Hickman and Charis Darnall also had near goals against United, which cobbled together a few scoring opportunities but could never completely solve the Rogue Wave's defensive riddles.

Hickman actually netted a goal before being whistled for offsides.

"I think when times got rough they really dug in and pulled it out," United coach Dawn Ackerman said of the Rogue Wave.

During its hot run in the Cup, the RVSC squad's midfield has orchestrated the O and the team's D has created crucial conundrums that have crippled challengers. Goalkeeper Sierra Bitterling has recorded all four shutouts and, with those combined efforts, the Rogue Wave has outscored its opponents 12-0.

Hickman netted four goals in her team's 5-0 victory over Table Rock Soccer Club Apoptosis and scored once in a 4-0 win over Nitro Blaze of Reno on Saturday.

So, how has Rogue Wave been so dominate?

"The best offense is a good defense," said Black.

The Rogue Wave needed all those skills and more during its second game on Sunday. In a tight match against the Chaos, Charis Darnall knocked in a goal with about 10 minutes to go after a series of passes by Black, Conway and Taylor Zehren.

Most of the girls on the Rogue Wave roster have played together since the fourth grade, coach Darnall said. They've won numerous Rogue Valley Cup titles, including four consecutively at the U11, 12, 13 and 14 levels.

The band of local all-stars grew up fast. Several players will compete collegiately next fall, including Black at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, Hickman at Academy of Art in San Francisco, Bitterling at Goshen College in Goshen, Ind., Ashley Baugh at George Fox University in Newberg and Rhianna Hall at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash.
