Lavern "Barney" William Johnston, 92, of Medford, Ore., passed Saturday, June 16, 2012. He was born April 11, 1920 in Grants Pass, Ore., to Peter and Hilda Johnston Sr. Except for his military service he spent most of his life in the Rogue Valley and Lake Creek areas. Barney served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enjoyed and was well-known by local ranchers for hauling hay. When younger, he liked to take his nephews deer hunting.

He is survived by two sisters, Blanche Zwan, of Grants Pass, Ore., and Ruth Miller, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by three brothers, G.W., Melvin, and Peter Johnston Jr.; and a sister, Betty Willock Johnston.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2201 N. Phoenix Rd., Medford, Ore.
