Frances J. "Sandy" Sherman, of Medford, Ore., passed away June 18, 2012, of cancer. She was born April 25, 1935, in Kansas City, Mo. She was the daughter of D.W. and Jo Geneva Kitchens. She was an "Air Force brat" who lived around the U.S. and the world. She graduated from high school in Rantoul, Ill., and then married John "Jack" Sherman, of Dayton, Ore. Over the course of their 21 year marriage she raised their three children. After the divorce she went to work in the insurance industry, retiring in 1997.

Sandy loved living in the Rogue Valley, arriving with her young family in 1962. She was active in the community until her recent illness. She served as treasurer for the Rogue Valley Friendship Club and was an original box-office volunteer for the Craterian Giner Rogers Theater. She was an avid bird watcher, reader, and played a mean hand of bridge. Some of her favorite activities included visiting the Pacific Ocean with her family, hitting the blackjack tables in Reno, Nev., pulling a pan-sized trout out of Willow Lake, and listening to classical music on the hill at Britt. She was devoted to many lucky dogs and cats, and really loved all animals, big or small, tame or fierce. She walked miles locally with her dog, Barkley, as well as around Oregon on Volksmarches, and also left footprints on many different continents in her world travels. Her bucket list was completed April 29, 2012, at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, which generously provided the opportunity for her and her family to ride Valerie, the African elephant. She was a member of the Audubon Society and, in recent years, had become a devoted supporter of Wildlife Images.

She is survived by her daughter Joni Arappagis, of Medford; son, Doug (Carmen) Sherman, of Newcastle, Calif.; daughter, Jennifer (Michael) Strong, of Eugene, Ore.; grandchildren, Willy Sherman, of Central Point, Ore., Brandon Sherman, of Rocklin, Calif., and Rachel Arappagis, of Medford; sister, Toni (Michael) Hanner, of Eugene; brother-in-law, Charlie Van Deusen, of Eugene; sisters-in-law, Janet Perkins, of Hillsboro, Ore., and Lee Kitchens, of Cascade Locks, Ore.; and last, her beloved dog, Barkley, and cat, Poly. Her mother, father, and brother, Buddy Kitchens, who passed away suddenly February 2012, preceded her in death.

She was the sun around which her family orbited and will be missed beyond measure. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wildlife Images, P.O. Box 36, Merlin, OR 97532. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 30, 2012, 11:00 a.m., at Rogue Valley Christian Church, 1440 South Oakdale, Medford.
