The Medford airport now sports a replica of the Oval Office on the second floor of the terminal building.

While presidents are usually whisked away in a convoy of Suburbans, local residents will have the opportunity to see the Oval Office meeting room during an open house from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 4.

The space will be rented out for ceremonies, meetings and events, said Airport Director Bern Case. "During these tough economic times, you have to be creative and think outside the box to generate revenue."

The 100,000-square-foot terminal opened in 2009, leaving lots of room for growth. The concept for the "Oval Office" emerged in 2010.

Case and his staff mulled their options before determining to take Chief Executive options to another level. So far, 25 sponsors have been involved in the project, providing everything from wall coverings, draperies and furnishings to a version of the Resolute Desk. The wood flooring replicates the same pattern that's in the White House. Three-dimen-sional wall coverings give a realistic feel to book-shelves and a view through the window into the Rose Garden.

"We are ecstatic that the completed room is pretty close to the original without being the precise dimensions," Case said. "I think people will be very excited about being able to hold special events in this area. There's no other airport in the nation that's got a room like this."

A look-alike contest will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on the Fourth during the open house for people dressed as a former or current president or first lady. Participants will receive one free use of the room and will have their picture taken. The top prize will be a pair of round-trip tickets to Los Angeles.

Open house attendees may have their parking tickets validated.
