Former state Sen. Lynn Newbry has died. According to his grandson, Chris Newbry, the longtime politician and community leader died Wednesday. He was 88.

Born in Talent, Newbry was the son of Earl Newbry, who was a state legislator from 1939 to 1947 and secretary of state from 1947 to 1957. After serving in what is now the U.S. Air Force during World War II, Lynn Newbry returned home to help his father run the family packing house and orchard.

Late in 1960, he was chosen by local officials to serve out the remaining two years of the term of a local state senator who had been elected to Congress. Newbry served 14 years in the state Senate.

After leaving the Legislature, he served as a director of Associated Oregon Industries, a director of the Valley of the Rogue Bank, on the Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission, the State Parks 2010 Citizens Committee, the Oregon Transportation Commission and the Southern Oregon Timber Industries Association.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Charlotte.
