August 1, 1921 June 28, 2012

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend Vera Potter, 90, passed away at home June 28, 2012, from the arms of her loving family and into the loving arms of her heavenly Father. Vera was born in Knoxville, Tenn., August 1, 1921, to Mattie (Stidham) and John Shannon. Both of her parents passed away before Vera was ten years of age and Vera was then loved and cared for by her aunts, Viola "Bobbi" Stidham and Mary Ruth Shannon, both of whom precede her in death.

In 1939, Vera married Douglas Mason, and together had two sons, John Albert Mason and Robert Phillip Mason. John and Phillip brought her great joy and have remained loving and devoted sons. In July 1968, Vera married the love of her life, Charles D. Potter, who survives. Always his biggest fan she encouraged Chuck through medical school. Together in 1973, they journeyed west to begin his medical practice and the rest of their life together, settling in Wilderville, Ore., where they created their dream home and have lived for the past 39 years. Together Chuck and Vera "Bird" have enjoyed many wonderful years of adventure, horse camping, scuba diving (which Vera learned at age 70), and discovering lands both near and far, often accompanied by their dear friend, Eugene Stevens, of Portland, Ore. Their home is always a place of joy and was the center of many gatherings for community, friends, and family. Vera was always an avid reader and seeker of truth who made friends easily; her participation in book club, dinner group, and meditation group was an important part in her life. Vera will forever be remembered for her contagious laugh and natural ability to make everyone feel like they were the most important person in her life; she truly loved you all. Vera and Chuck have always been involved in their community and Vera lead the charge with her focus to provide opportunity and encouragement to children. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of the Rogue Valley and a constant champion for children. She was honored by the community and those children with numerous awards and recognitions throughout the years.

Survivors in addition to her loving husband and soul mate, Charles D. Potter, include sons, John (Susan) Mason, of Marshall, Mich. and Phillip (Chris) Mason, and their children and grandchildren, all of Medford, Ore.; Vi (Tom) Mason, of Florida; grandson, Craig (Erica) Mason, of Novi, Mich., Mark (Mary Jo) Mason, and great-granddaughter, Madeline Mason, all of San Rafael, Calif.; and her loving cousin, Olive Belle Chrysler, was a friend for her lifetime. Many more family and lifetime friends too numerous to mention all brought her great happiness. A special thank you to her friend, Louise Sousa, as well as caregivers, Kathy Schultz and Amanda Harris.

Vera, Bird, our Dearest One the light you've brought has shown brightly for so many. You have used your gifts with purpose and have brought such deep love and joy to all who've known you. We hold you in our hearts until we meet again.

Stephens Family Chapel is in charge of arrangements. A celebration of Vera's life will be Friday, July 6, 2012, 11:00 a.m., at the Newman United Methodist Church in Grants Pass, Ore., reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Vera's name can be made to the Boys and Girls Club of the Rogue Valley.
