Jamie Flynn pitched effectively for seven innings and the Medford Mustangs used a big outburst to post a 7-2 victory over Three Rivers from the central Oregon coast in a pool-play game Friday in the Jim Chubb Memorial wood bat tournament at Harry & David Field.

The victory improves Medford to 2-0 in the blue pool while the Withnell Dodgers of Salem are 2-0 in the red pool. The winners of each pool vie for the championship in the eight-team event Sunday.

Flynn (3-0) struck out nine and allowed one earned run. He had retired 10 in a row before a seventh-inning single. Flynn worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation by giving up a sacrifice fly and an infield out for a run.

The Mustangs (12-8) broke open the game with five runs in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Medford had two outs and nobody on when Taren Bradd reached on an error and Evan Westhelle-Grant also got on with an error that sent Bradd to third. Bradd scored the first run of the frame on a passed ball.

Cody Hoff continued the rally with a single to right and Charlie Walker followed with an RBI single. Taylor Humphrey delivered an RBI single and Walker ended up scoring from third on a double steal. Ethan Schlecht's double drove in the fifth run of the inning.

Schlecht finished with three hits and two RBIs.

In other results from Friday's tournament games: the Sandy Pioneers defeated Mound Time of Hillsboro 11-2, the Withnell Dodgers registered a 4-1 victory against the Red Bluff Bulls and Springfield got past the Klamath Falls Falcons, 7-2.

The Mustangs final pool game is at 7 tonight at Harry & David against the Spingfield Titans.
