Hugh Leslie passed away Wednesday July 18, 2012, at Star Gulch Ranger Station, where he was being issued his radio and keys for his next job. He was to begin volunteering at Dutchman Peak Fire Watch Lookout on Thursday July 19, 2012.

Hugh (Hughy) will always be remembered for his ability to make you smile. He was a great man who loved his family and friends. Born to Homer and Mildred Leslie December 31, 1942, in Nampa, Idaho, he graduated from Nampa High School in 1961. As a young man, Hugh was a Boy Scout and worked many jobs. He moved to the Rogue Valley, where he began a family and his 30-plus-year career with the U.S. Forest Service. Hugh was hired as a hotshot at Star Gulch Ranger Station in the Applegate Valley in the mid '60s and continued his career fighting fires and as a timber sale administrator. He enjoyed many years coaching soccer, spending time at the lake on the pontooner, traveling, and lending a helping hand to family and friends.

Hugh is survived by wife, Kay (also a former Forest Service employee); sister, Vicki Crank; son, Ross Leslie (Tracie and three grandchildren); daughter, Tricia Leslie Deller (John and one grandchild); stepson, Steve Straube (Donna); and stepdaughters, Sue Snavely (Cliff), Debbie McGuire (Del), and Audra Feeback (Mark). Please join us 11:00 a.m., August 5, 2012, at Cantrell-Buckley Park on the Applegate River for a BBQ/ Potluck to celebrate the life of this beautiful person. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Access.
